FIMA experts installed a number of engineering solutions in the Kaunas tunnel, including a new traffic control system, fire detection and extinguishing systems, a groundwater monitoring system, safety and communication systems and gauge control system.
The most complex part of the project was the installation of a powerful fire extinguishing system. When triggered, pipelines inside the tunnel are filled with 35 cubic metres of water which is sprayed via a tailor-madesprinkler system.
FIMA also installeda hazard detection system capable of precisely locating the source of a fire using a temperature cable rather than simple smoke detectors.
FIMA experts also modernised the tunnel’s obsolete traffic control system, installing, amongst other things, new sirens and light-based warning systems that warn a workforce in the tunnel of an approaching train.
Alarm telephones and a radio communication systemwere also installed on the section of railway that runs through the tunnel.
In addition, FIMA installed gauge control system in Palemonas station which sits just outside the tunnel. The sensors detect if a train exceeds the size limitations and can, if necessary, stop it at a red signal.
Specialised technologies were employed to monitor ground water levels in the tunnel which could undermine its foundations if allowed to build up.
The fire extinguishing system is tailor-made for the railway with an overhead contact line and is unique in Lithuania.
