FIMA specialists installed a complex of integrated traffic management and notification systems on a 190km section of the Via Baltica in Latvia. The systems are designed to ensure that traffic runs smoothly and safely. 

In 2018, FIMA participated in implementing the first large-scale intelligent transportation system project in Latvia. Work was carried out on 24 facilities on the E67. 

During the course of the project, FIMA specialists designed and installed intelligent transportation systems, which involved the installation of 30 variable message signs, the modernisation of eight existing weather stations and the installation of five new ones, the installation of a traffic flow analysis system and the development of software to control all of these systems. 

Variable information signs are linked with the weather stations so that drivers can see real-time information on relevant driving conditions. These variable message signs have a two-fold purpose: some of them alert drivers about the existing traffic conditions and the road surface, while others inform them of the current maximum speed limit.

The project also upgraded the traffic light control and transport flow analysis systems which help optimise transport flows. For example, drivers avoid unnecessary stops at red traffic lights at night when traffic flows are lower. 

The project was implemented under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) cross-border cooperation programme, Interreg Central Baltic. 

Project distinctness

A new dedicated IT solution integrating three different systems was developed for the project. The system automatically regulates the speed limit on a stretch of the road and, where necessary, allows electronic signs to be controlled manually from a traffic management centre.
