FIMA has designed and installed a state-of-the-art ionising radiation control system for cargo comprised of 25 control gates at Klaipėda Seaport. 

In co-operation with the US Department of Energy, the US company SES-Tech was selected as the winner of the tender for a project to introduce an ionising radiation control system at Klaipėda Seaport. The company was committed to making it work efficiently so it was looking for reliable partner who was knowledgeable in the specifics of Lithuania and in systems integration.
As the local system integrator, FIMA was in charge of designing and installing the ionising radiation control system. Due to the variety of traffic, different types of radiation control gates were installed: for vehicles, pedestrians and trains. FIMA’s specialists have built 25 gates at the seaport’s different sites.

As part of the project, the company has also carried out all the necessary construction work and has installed a video surveillance system at the gates and infrastructure for data transmission via fibre optic cables and for the power supply. In some places, additional barriers, speed bumps and traffic lights have been provided.

Once the systems were installed, the entire flow of people and cargo was redistributed in such a way that it now has to go through the radiation control gates. Gamma and neutron radiation detectors installed in the gates scan the level of ionising radiation in cargo or vehicles. If radiation is identified, they automatically transmit a warning signal to the central emergency warning station located in the Seaport Frontier Station of the SBGS Coastal Guard Frontier District.

When cargo, a vehicle or person exceeds the established parameters, advanced technology photographs the suspected vehicle or person, lowers barriers to close the road and transmits all the relevant information to the central emergency warning station.

Once increased ionising radiation has been detected, the vehicle, cargo or person is first stopped by security staff before SBGS officers come on site to take control of the suspect object.

During the project work, the uninterrupted operation of businesses in the port was guaranteed.
