Smart intersection in Lithuania awarded gold medal

Back to News

The first intersection in Lithuania with a public transport priority system, which is the result of a joint project between FIMA, the intelligent engineering solutions provider, and Kelprojektas, the transport infrastructure engineering company, won a gold medal in the service category at the Lithuanian Product of the Year annual awards hosted by the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists.

The intersection on M. K. Čiurlionio street next to the railway station in Kaunas has been upgraded this year to allow the efficient control of public transport at an extremely busy intersection with a high accident rate. It has been equipped with an advanced system that uses radio frequencies to identify public transport vehicles and gives them traffic priority over other road users. It is the first time that this type of priority system has been introduced in Lithuania.

“Managing the transport system would be unimaginable without state-of-the-art technology to help address different traffic problems, from reducing congestion and accident rates to the recording of traffic offences and real-time monitoring of road conditions. This award shows that modern solutions work well and that the role of technology in this sector will be even greater in the future,” FIMA’s General Director, Gintaras Juknevičius, said as he received the award at the Office of the Government.
