FIMA will modernise a railway junction in the strategic Klaipėda Seaport

Back to News

FIMA, an engineering solutions company, will carry out the works of designing, construction and installation of a centralised railway traffic control system of the Nemunas railway network situated in Klaipėda seaport (Draugystė railway station).  It is expected that the implementation of this project will enable the seaport to increase its cargo flows and to improve the seaport‘s interaction with rail and road transport networks.

“The electric centralisation of the Nemunas network and the second railway, which is currently under construction, will contribute to the increase of the capacity of the Klaipėda railway hub. In 2010, Lithuanian Railways carried 48.06 m tons of cargoes and the planned 5 m tons increase resulting from the completion of the Klaipėda hub development projects will contribute to the growth of the overall cargo carrying capacity in Lithuania“, says Egidijus Blekaitis, Project Manager, Lietuvos Geležinkeliai AB.

As part of the deployment of the electrical centralisation system, FIMA will implement an automated railway traffic control system in both the new railway line and the Nemunas railway network. Interaction with the traffic control equipment already in place at Draugystė railway station will be ensured. This modernisation will help meet the increasing demand for cargo carriage capacities at Klaipėda Seaport and will enable a more effective use of the available transport potential.

The works are planned to be completed in September 2014. The project will be co-financed by the European Union and Lietuvos Geležinkeliai AB.
