Fima has Implemented Solutions for Control of Transit Trains to Kaliningrad

Aiming to increase security of Lithuania and the EU the control of transit trains travelling from Russia to the Kaliningrad Region and back was strengthened. Advanced solutions that were implemented by Fima in particular railway tracks and stations will enable more vigilant supervision of people transiting Lithuania who jump out of trains or throw out illegally carried goods.

“Security of transit train corridor is of extreme importance as Lithuania is often selected as a destination of illegal migrants who are willing to access the free Schengen area. With the help of security technologies implemented in crucial tracks we will be able to quickly identify persons who would try to illegally detrain or throw something out,” Vizgirdas Telyčėnas Police Commissioner General said.

Commissioned by the Police Department Fima – a company of intellectual engineering solutions – has installed surveillance systems in four stations (in Vilnius, Kaunas, Palemonas and Lentvaris) of the railway track Vilnius–Kaunas as well as near Vokė bridge under the stage 1 of the Special Kaliningrad Transit Programme that was funded by the European Union. The value of works completed totals to LTL 4.8 million. The funds were allocated by the European Union.

“One of the greatest territory video surveillance systems in Lithuania based on IP technology has been developed as a result of the project. The system meets the highest EU security and reliability standards.” Gintaras Juknevičius General Manager of Fima admitted.

The company installed 109 video surveillance cameras (53 controlled in distance and 56 fixed cameras) in the above-mentioned railway objects and laid almost 2 km sensor cable that records the break-in cases into the territory in particular railway tracks.

“Sensor cable is connected to video cameras. Once a person accesses the territory protected by the cable a video camera automatically turns to the spot and starts recording and sends the video to the screens installed in the surveillance station where officers are on watch. Accordingly the cameras automatically turn and start recording the railway when a transit train approaches,” the Head of Fima explained technical possibilities of the security system installed.

The railway video monitored by cameras is directly transmitted to video surveillance stations in Vilnius and Kaunas. The signals are also send to the traffic police commissariats and Gelsauga company which is in charge of the railway security.

Transit railway objects and tracks are monitored by video cameras 24 hours a day. As there were installed high resolution cameras, it will enable recognition of violators by their clothes and even allow seeing their faces.

“The implemented project will ensure secure and smooth transit of trains within the territory of Lithuania as well as help maintain public order. For instance, specific violators were already registered in Lentvaris railway level crossing who crossed the railway during forbidden hours,” Sergejus Byčkovas Chief of the Traffic Police Commissariat said.
