Railway traffic to be controlled from Vilnius

Back to News

All the traffic on railroads, running in the territory of Lithuania, will be organized and supervised from Vilnius. Upon affiliation of the traffic control center that used to function in Šiauliai, Train Traffic Control Center that is located here became the major and the only such center in Lithuania. It is expected that the shake-out will enable more efficient and smoother organization of train traffic in the country.

Relocation cost "Lietuvos geležinkeliai” LTL 5,24 million. The project was implemented by the engineering solutions company “Fima”.

“From now on, all the information on railroad traffic will come to one headquarters. This will enable efficient planning of train traffic, expeditious response to arising situations and making of the necessary decisions, which is particularly important in extreme cases" says the Director of Project Implementation Department of “Fima”, Artūras Šuliauskas.
Established in Vilnius, the Traffic Control Center draws up and corrects train traffic schedules of the entire Lithuania, arranges traffic breaks for railroad infrastructure maintenance and repairs as well as engages in other traffic organization and monitoring activities.

It is forecasted that installation of new traffic control centralization devices would enhance the railroad traffic safety, seeing as the system allows analyzing and coordinating the actions of the workers and the necessary additional information is provided.

Presence of one Traffic Control Center in Vilnius will enable more efficient management of train traffic in the future, - states the Head of Automatics, Communications and Electricity Supply Service of Infrastructure Direction of “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”, Romanas Račas. For that purpose, modernization of electric centralization systems of individual stations is necessary as well as integration thereof into one system. This would allow remote controlling of all the railroad traffic control signal devices and, in case of unexpected situations, transferring the control of signal devices to the stations, thus ensuring duplication of traffic control system. Situation on the railroad sections would therefore be better managed and costs would be cut.

According to the specialist of “Fima”, one of the most difficult tasks and challenges, when pursuing this project, was the accomplishment of relocation without interfering with the railroad traffic. No train traffic disorders were recorded due to the works being carried out over the project implementation period that lasted a year.
