A new personnel warning and information system was installed in Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP). It will inform the employees more expediently and accurately and coordinate their actions in extreme situations.

The project worth 300 thousand LTL was implemented by electronic engineering solutions company “Fima”.

“The personnel warning system that had been operating since 1987 was morally and physically out-of-date, thus we decided to update it. The installed Danish system will inform about the incidents at the INPP promptly and precisely, thus increasing the safety of the personnel,” says   Vladimiras Apanovicius, Head of INPP Communications and Fire Safety Department.

During the project, 17 dynamoelectric sirens and 27 speakers in the corridors of the 1st and the 2nd blocks were replaced with 6 acoustic sirens, 4 more sirens were installed outside the buildings. They will send low-tone signals that can be heard at a distance longer than that with the previously used high-tone signals.

“Acoustic sirens can transmit up to 100 signals of different tones instead of 2. Moreover, they can transmit voice messages recorded beforehand or live voice messages. They help to organize the employees’ actions effectively after the alarm is given and indicate the necessary measures that should be taken,” says Andrius Gradeckas, Director of “Fima” Solutions Department.

As acoustic sirens are also integrated in the inner personnel audio information network, the alarms will be heard not only by the employees in the above-mentioned blocks or outside but also by the administration.

INPP was one of the first Lithuanian enterprises to have installed the modern personnel warning system. According to the Director of “Fima” Solutions Department, the situation with personnel warning is especially bad at other Lithuanian industrial enterprises.

“Most enterprises either don’t have personnel warning systems or they are out-of-date, installed years ago. They are not reliable. Besides, they were not developed during the expansion of the territories of the enterprises, thus the alarms cannot reach most employees working outside,” Gradeckas explains the situation.

According to him, the experience shows that uncontrolled situation inside the enterprise may do more harm both to the enterprise itself and the environment and people.

According to “Fima”, there are 250 enterprises in Lithuania that use different chemical substances. These enterprises should pay more attention to the possibilities of modern technologies to ensure the safety of their employees and the environment, as well as expedient reaction.
