Vilnius Airport Will Become the Most Modern Airport in Lithuania

Back to News

Vilnius International Airport is going to become the most modern airport in Lithuania and one of the most innovative airports in the Baltic States. By 1 October 2007 a new terminal will be built in the territory of the airport. Different modern technologies will be allocated over 20 million LTL from the budget of the new terminal construction.

The constructor of the object YIT Kausta, the winner of the tender, has already signed a 9 million worth contract with electronic engineering solutions company Fima that will install security, fire, building management, passenger information systems, as well as access and passenger flow control solutions.

“We are the largest airport in Lithuania. The flows of passengers rise by 20% each year, thus we pay special attention to investments in modern technologies to ensure the quality and expedition of our service”, said Media Representative of Vilnius International Airport Arunas Marcinkevicius.

The major part of solutions implemented in the new terminal will be integrated with each other and connected to the systems of the old terminal. This will make management of airport operations more effective.

“Vilnius Airport already has the largest passenger information system in Lithuania, and having the system expanded and software of a higher level installed, there will be no analogues in our country. The new software will make distribution of information on the screens and its organization more effective”, said Giedrius Zaicevas Fima Security Solutions Department Director.

Plasma screens will be installed in the new terminal. They will display not only the time of flights or other related information but also advertisements. Advertising possibilities will also be implemented in the passenger information system of the main terminal, also installed by Fima 5 years ago.

Another exciting innovation is passenger flow control system. It will make passenger flow distribution more effective during arrivals and departures. “For example, when the plane lands and the system identifies the landing space, unnecessary passages will be closed automatically, and the passages for reaching the control stations will only be open”, said G. Zaicevas

The implementation of the above-mentioned electronic engineering solutions is not the first project implemented by Fima in the future terminal with an area of 14 000 sq metres. The company has performed the evaluation of the terminal project. The defects were identified and eliminated, thus Vilnius Airport will be capable of servicing 3 million passengers instead of 2 million each year.

The total cost of the new passenger terminal construction will amount to 96.7 million LTL. Nearly 20% of the sum is allotted from Schengen programme funds.
