“Fima” will Implement New Technologies for the Keeping of Radioactive Waste

The special radioactive waste burying station located in Sirvintai region Bartkuskis forest, usually called Maisiagala depository, until now has been protected from the outsiders by a few surveillance cameras, almost a 40 year-old fence surrounding the territory and the guards on duty. But a modern protection system will be mounted by the autumn of the next year for observing larger than 2 ha depository territory belonging to waste management agency (RATA).

Company of electronic engineering solutions “Fima” undertook the responsibility to mount it; last week it signed a contract of 1,55 million Litas with Central Project Management Agency.

“Both abroad and in Lithuania the depositories of radioactive waste are ascribed to the increased protection objects. Though in our country nobody has ever tried threatening the radioactive waste, their safety must be strengthened”, - claimed Deputy Director of RATA, Algirdas Vaidotas.

According to the Director of Project Implementation Section of “Fima”, Arturas Suliauskas, faster than within one year the company will build a new fence, more than 30 stationary video surveillance cameras, protection of the territory boundary and lighting system, automobile checkout section and other protection solutions.

“We are also planning to implement protection technologies which have not yet been used in Lithuania in Maisiagala depository; nevertheless, more detailed information is still confidential due to the high safety requirements set”, - told Director A. Suliauskas.

Deputy Director of RATA, Algirdas Vaidotas, believes that progressive system will not only ensure safety, but will also be convenient for the guards on duty.

“Since the territory of waste depository is of an oblong and arched form, it is impossible to see the whole territory form one place, therefore, the guards are forced to keep walking on the territory. After implementation of the new system they will be able to observe the whole territory form one place”, - claimed A. Vaidotas.

According to the Director of Project Implementation Section of “Fima”, while designing Maisiagala radioactive waste protection system, the requirements established by the French experts of “Thales Engineering & Consulting” were taken into consideration. Money for the mounting of the system has been received from European Union PHARE program.
